PREMIER TECH is a diversified company composed of seven business units specialized in various areas of expertise. PREMIER TECH's three groups and seven business units arose naturally from activities relating directly or indirectly to peat moss. Our vision was basically, and still is today, to exploit this natural resource that is sphagnum peat moss as well as the knowledge base developed around it and to develop products and services for our customer base. This process allows us to grow businesses and therefore let our team members express their full potential.

The surface of a wind-swept lake, a little sphagnum in the sun - something of seemingly little importance. Yet, take a billion of these lowly plants, accumulate them on top of the others over the years and you will obtain one of our planet's most fascinating renewable resources: peat moss.

This invaluable biomass results from the accumulation and partial decomposition of various mosses, the most coveted being sphagnum. On a global basis, it is estimated that peat bogs cover up to 440 million hectares - mainly in the Northern Hemisphere - to depths sometimes greater than 10 meters.

Apart from the extent of world reserves, what makes peat moss such a valuable resource is its versatility. Peat moss, which for many years was used mainly for energy and horticultural purposes, has gradually found new uses. For example, it is today used in wastewater and air treatment, industrial and municipal residue composting process as well as to enrich tillable lands in order to promote plant growth and water retention.

From our first beginnings, the very nature of our activities has convinced us of the incredible potential in the tiniest forms of life. Like Shumacher, we believe that we live on a planet that is very small, yet it has the necessary resources to sustain our development. It is up to us to live off these resources without squandering the tremendous capital they represent. PREMIER TECH has a team of over 265 members working in various areas of Innovation, Research and Development (IR&D). Our IR&D team is made up of biologists, agronomists, chemists, engineers and technicians, just to name a few, who work in autonomous teams on specific projects. They use state-of-the-art technology to conceive, develop and give tangible form to value-added products, processes and systems that we then make available to our customers around the world.

It's an analogy that the business publication "Les Affaires" drew quite explicitly, in fact, when it said "PREMIER TECH is to the production of peat what Silicon Valley is to data processing: a laboratory of ideas and of engineers unceasingly in search of challenges."

However today, Rivière-du-Loup is the home base of PREMIER TECH because it is as much a part of our culture and of what defines us as a company as are our people. We strongly believe that being based in Rivière-du-Loup has enabled us to achieve what we are today and will help us become all that we can be over the next 80 years.

Rivière-du-Loup is located in the province of Québec in Canada. More precisely, it is located between Québec City and Rimouski, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River.
